John Kennedy Glumly Tells Sean Hannity Chances of Passing SAVE Act ‘Have Gone Down Immeasurably’

Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) lamented the odds the Senate passes the SAVE America Act are on life support during a Monday interview on Sean Hannity’s Fox News program.

“We blow opportunities like it’s our job,” Kennedy vented.

He then pointed to the SAVE America Act — the legislation backed by President Donald Trump which would require ID to vote in federal elections — as a prime example of the Senate’s incompetence.

Kennedy said he wished Republican lawmakers took a few extra days to try and get the act approved before lawmakers took their August recess last week, with senators heading for vacation after failing to get the act pushed through yet again.

“I know the party line is that we’re gonna do it when we get back, but I think our chances of getting it passed have gone down immeasurably,” Kennedy said. “Look, all it would’ve taken is a majority vote.”

Hannity was as bummed as his guest.

“I mean, it’s just disappointing, because it’s so fundamental — proof of citizenship, an ID,” Hannity said. “You need an ID if you wanna buy beer, you wanna buy cigarettes if you’re a smoker, if you wanna buy a Juul pod, if you wanna buy a nicotine pouch, you know, a bottle of wine for dinner.”

Hannity added it was “nuts” Americans need an ID for other common things like boarding an airplane, but not for voting.

The Senate’s inability to pass the SAVE America Act comes after it had been passed multiple times in the House.

CNN data guru Harry Enten earlier this year noted a handful of polls in recent years show around 80% of Americans support voter ID laws. Enten said it is one of the few topics a majority of liberals and conservatives agree on, with Enten pointing to a 2025 Pew survey which found 71% of Dems and 95% of Republicans backed voter ID.

“Normally, you might expect, hey, there’d be a big divide by party, with Republicans really for it and Democrats really against it,” Enten said. “But not really here.”
