Democrat Jasmine Crockett Says Abrego Garcia a ‘Lot Less Criminal Than the Person That’s Sitting in the White House’

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) said on MSNBC Saturday that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man erroneously deported by the Trump administration, is “a lot less criminal” than President Donald Trump.

Crockett’s comments came during an interview on The Katie Phang Show, where she was asked about efforts by Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) to assist Abrego Garcia, who was imprisoned in El Salvador last month.

The Department of Homeland Security later acknowledged the deportation was a mistake.

Van Hollen traveled to El Salvador this week to meet with Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident who illegally entered the United States in 2012 and was held in prison following his return to El Salvador.

Crockett praised Van Hollen’s involvement and expressed concern about his ongoing detention when host Katie Phang asked her if more elected officials should emulate the senator.

“Yeah. No, absolutely,” Crockett said. “So first of all, kudos to Senator Van Hollen. And honestly, that’s what it looks like to be an elected representative. He represents Maryland.”

Crockett then compared Agrego Garcia to Trump in terms of convictions:

This is someone who is a Maryland resident. And he decided that he was going to go down there and check on him. And honestly, I don’t know that I was convinced that he was alive. I really don’t. And so I was happy to see that he was alive, number one. But number two, if Senator Van Hollen can get down there, if the president can get up here and get to the White House, then I don’t understand why we can’t get Abrego up out of there.

I mean, we know that they admitted that they were wrong. Now they’re trying to double back and say, well, he’s this terrible person and all this kind of stuff. But here’s the reality. As far as I’m concerned, he’s a lot less criminal than the person that’s sitting in the White House, because last time I checked, he doesn’t have any criminal convictions.

Abrego Garcia has been accused by former Trump administration officials of being affiliated with MS-13, committing domestic violence, and suspected human trafficking. He has no criminal convictions in the US.

Trump was convicted in New York last year on 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records. He also faced other legal battles before he was elected last year.

Crockett claimed she had never seen a “rap sheet” like Trump’s.
