Fox’s Gasparino Pleads With Trump Administration to ‘Stop Talking About Tariffs So Much’ Amid Market Selloff
Fox Business Senior Correspondent Charles Gasparino advised the Trump administration to avoid discussing tariffs, which have sent stocks tumbling in recent weeks.
President Donald Trump has imposed, paused, and reimposed – either partially or in full – some tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico.
Trump announced on Feb. 1 that he would impose 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, effective Feb. 4. Two days later, he pushed the date to March 4. The next day, he paused tariffs on automobiles at the request of the Big 3 U.S. automakers. On March 6, the president announced a halt on tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports that are compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which he signed in his first term.
Gasparino joined Monday’s edition of The Story on Fox News, where he advised Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to stop mentioning tariffs, lest they fuel Wall Street’s bearish “herd mentality.” As he spoke, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was in the process of shedding 890 points – about two percent – for the day.
“The herd is really negative right now, and it’s focused on tariffs,” he said. “I saw him at The Economic Club [of Washington D.C.], and it was a very wonky speech where it was all about tariffs and trying to explain it and all this stuff. And at the end, he starts talking about all the good stuff, the candy that’s coming. We’re getting good stuff coming from this economy. And for the markets, I think some of this is a sales job. They have to go out there and maybe stop talking about tariffs so much and start talking about how we’re gonna infuse the economy. We’re gonna release the animal spirits. We’re gonna deregulate stuff.”
While the major U.S. stock indexes spiked after Trump’s victory in November, those gains have been erased over the last few months.
