Kansas City-Area Congressman Finds Out About Parade Shooting in City While on CNN

Rep. Mark Alford (R-MO) appeared on Wednesday’s CNN News Central to discuss the southern border when he was given some terrible news that hit much closer to home.

A Super Bowl parade for the Kansas City Chiefs was marred by gunfire that killed at least one person and injured at least 20 others. Police say the incident occurred near Union Station and that multiple people are in custody.

Alford, whose fourth congressional district encompasses the eastern suburbs of Kansas City and a small part of the city, joined Boris Sanchez from the Capitol to discuss immigration when the anchor apprised him of the situation.

“Let’s discuss the situation at the border and much more with Republican Congressman Mark Alford of Missouri,” Sanchez began. “Congressman, as I was preparing for our interview today, I realized that you’re a Chiefs fan and I was going to congratulate you on the Super Bowl when I know that you may have considered going to the parade, but I do have some sad news to share with you. It appears that there were shots fired at the parade. CNN has just confirmed that shots were fired at the parade celebrating the Chiefs win in Kansas City.”

Sanchez asked if Alford knew about the shooting and if there was anything he could share.

“No, Boris,” the lawmaker replied. “That’s the first I heard of it.”

Alford, who could apparently see CNN’s live feed, explained that viewers were looking at Union Station in downtown Kanas City.

“I was there last year sitting on the third row as we celebrated the Chiefs victory in Super Bowl LVII,” he said. “I don’t want to speculate on what’s going on there, but this was a fear that I had.”

Alford went on to call the situation “very disheartening.”

Sanchez agreed and then pivoted to the original topic of the southern border.
