SHELL SHOCK: Trump Agriculture Chief Wildly Eggs-agerates Drop in Egg Prices on Fox

President Donald Trump’s Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins dramatically overestimated the cost of eggs on Thursday, telling Fox Business host Stu Varney that the cost of eggs is down a whopping 90 percent.

The monumental eggs-aggeration came after Varney introduced Rollins on Varney & Co., presenting the latest figures on food costs in America.

Eggs, he was pleased to report, are down 27 percent.

As Rollins touted the Trump administration’s success on driving down various food costs since Joe Biden’s time in office, she had some figures of her own.

“In the four years of Joe Biden, the cost of food went up 25 percent, which is just stunning. Over the last year and a half, we’re at about 3 percent, which aligns with the national average. So all in, we align with that national average. And you’re right, eggs are way down more, I think you said 17 percent (he actually said 27 percent). I think they’re down 90 percent; berries are down, chicken breasts are down. There are outliers, and one of those is beef, but it’s down from where it was six months ago. So we’re trending in the right direction.”

Rollins then added, “The president is right, as soon as we get the job done in Iran, the gas and fuel prices start coming way down again, and we will begin to see more relief.”

While the cost of eggs is down significantly since Trump took office in January 2025 — at times by nearly 50 percent — it’s nowhere near the 90 percent that Rollins described.

Perhaps Rollins’ number came from wholesale costs paid to farmers, which plummeted 93 percent in May, according to Farm Bureau economist Bernt Nelson.

At the height of the egg crisis, driven largely by an outbreak of avian flu that sent prices over $5 per dozen, Rollins once suggested that Americans struggling to pay for groceries could raise their own chickens to save on eggs.

“I think the silver lining in all this is how do we, in our backyards — we’ve got chickens too in our backyard — how do we solve for something like this?’ Rollins said on Fox & Friends in March 2025. “And people are sort of looking around thinking, “Wow, well, maybe I can get a chicken in my backyard,’ and it’s awesome.”
