Van Jones on Verge of Tears on CNN As Election Slips Away From Harris: ‘Woke Up This Morning With a Dream… Going to Bed With a Nightmare’

CNN political commentator Van Jones was on the verge of tears on Tuesday evening as the 2024 presidential election continued to slip away from Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I’m thinking about the people who are not a part of anybody’s elite, who are hurting tonight,” Jones told his colleagues as former President Donald Trump edged closer towards victory:

There are African-American women who know a little bit about being talked down to, they know a little bit about having their economic dreams crushed, who tried to dream a big dream over the past couple of months, and tonight they are trading in a lot of hope for a lot of hurt, and they were hoping that maybe this time, this time, one of their own could be seen as worthy. And once again, they are facing rejection, and that hurts.

They thought tomorrow morning they were gonna walk out with their shoulders back a little bit, maybe be able to breathe for the first time, and feel like they belong someplace. They did everything that they knew how to do and it’s gonna be harder than it should be tomorrow for them to hold their heads up, and they’re not the only people who are hurting tonight. If you’re a parent of a trans kid, your child’s face was used as a springboard to power for somebody. That doesn’t feel good.

He continued, “There are going to be people tomorrow who are going to be handing clothes at the dryers to people who don’t have papers. There are gonna be people who are gonna be cleaning your teeth tomorrow who don’t have papers. And they are terrified tonight.”

Jones concluded, “So it’s easy to blow this off, ‘Oh look at the elites, they’re gonna get their comeuppance.’ It’s not the elites that’s gonna pay the price. It’s people who woke up this morning with a dream and are going to bed with a nightmare.”

As Jones made his remarks, CNN’s election results tracker showed Trump with 246 electoral votes versus Harris’s 187. CNN’s tracker also showed Trump with 51.2% of the popular vote versus Harris’s 47.2%.

Jones is no stranger to almost tearing up live on-air. In July alone, the CNN commentator choked up twice over President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race. A few weeks prior, Jones was on the verge of tears while suggesting Biden should be replaced.

In November 2020, Jones also broke down into tears after Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election.
