Mikey Day Turns Anti-Trump Bit Into Gonzo Slapstick Masterpiece On SNL Weekend Update

Saturday Night Live’s Mikey Day turned a low-hanging anti-Trump premise into an outrageous slapstick tour de force on Weekend Update as a man who just walked into a spider web explaining the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariff policies.

Walton Goggins of White Lotus fame was the guest on this week’s edition of Saturday Night Live, capping off the show’s 50th season with some buzzworthy sketches. The Arcade Fire was the musical guest, and James Austin Johnson sent Trump up during the cold open.

But many fans of the sketch show wait around just to see the musical guest, and then catch the weekly nightly news parody currently anchored by Colin Jost and Michael Che.

One feature that has come to comprise half of the Update show-within-the-show — or more — are character pieces that feature guest commentators that you really don’t see on the news these days, but used to punctuate local broadcasts in the days of Gilda Radner‘s legendary bits.

The Season 50 Weekend Update finale was thick with character pieces, but Day stole the show with his go-for-broke performance as the man who never quite gets around to explaining the impact of Trump’s tariffs:

COLIN JOST: President Trump’s tariffs are having massive cascading effects on global trade. Here to unpack how this will affect you, the consumer, is a guy who just walked into a spiderweb.

GUY WHO JUST WALKED INTO A SPIDERWEB: I’m so sorry, I just walked into a spiderweb. Oh, I think there was a spider in it! I felt something like hit my shoulder. Is there anything on me?

COLIN JOST: I really, I don’t see anything.

GUY WHO JUST WALKED INTO A SPIDERWEB: Oh, God, I’m sorry.

COLIN JOST: I don’ see anything, why don’t you just take us through what’s going on with these tariffs, because the more I hear about the tariffs, the more confused I get.

GUY WHO JUST WALKED INTO A SPIDERWEB: Yeah, well, I like to tell, I feel something. There’s a spider on me! There’s a spider on me! It’s on me, and I feel it! It’s not me! Get it off! Get It Off!

MICHAEL CHE: It’s right there. It’s there, man.

GUY WHO JUST WALKED INTO A SPIDERWEB: Oh my god! Oh my God! I’m so sorry! I felt it on my skin! On my skin!! Oh, I’m so sorry. I’m sorry. Oh! Sorry. Should I still talk about tariffs?

COLIN JOST: No! Get out of here! Guy is just walking to a spiderweb.
