Chris Christie on Menendez Win: People Didn’t Like Him, But They ‘Didn’t Like the President More’

Perhaps no one on 2018 election night coverage knows New Jersey politics and President Donald Trump better than former Jersey governor Chris Christie. And as the result was projected that Sen. Bob Menendez (R-NJ) would retain his seat, the ex-governor put the result squarely on the shoulders of the president.

Appearing on ABC’s coverage, Christie said this, when asked about the Menendez victory:

“I heard lots of people say they didn’t like Menendez, but they didn’t like the president more.”

Menendez survived despite facing federal corruption charges in a case that was dropped this past January after a jury could not reach a verdict in the trial. Christie believes animus towards the president in the Garden State outweighed any negative feelings against the senator.

“The Trump headwind in New Jersey is probably as hard as it is any place in the country.”
