Colbert Condemns Protestors Who Confronted Ted Cruz at Restaurant: ‘This is Not Helpful, Don’t Do This’
On Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert briefly addressed the recent confrontation between Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and anti-Kavanaugh protestors.
Late Monday, video surfaced of Cruz and his wife Heidi Cruz being chased out of a restaurant in Washington D.C. by protestors who oppose his support for Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh, chanting “We believe survivors!”
Well, Colbert weighed in on it in a multi-story segment called “Meanwhile.”
“Texas Senator Ted Cruz had a rough night,” Colbert began, which was immediately responded with loud boos from the audience. He joked, “They’re just chanting, ‘Cruuuuuuuz.'”
The Late Show host explained how he’s “tight friends” with Kavanaugh and is in a close Senate race with Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), who the audience supported with loud cheers.
Despite having chuckled at female protestor’s remark when she said, “Beto is way hotter than you, dude,” Colbert opposed their confrontational tactics.
“First of all, this is not helpful. Don’t do this,” Colbert told his audience. “Plus, you can’t compare Cruz’s looks to Beto. It’s like comparing apples to attractive men.”
Ted Cruz is the latest Republican and Trump ally to be ambushed by angry protestors in a public setting in recent months. Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), former Press Secretary Sean Spicer, White House advisor Stephen Miller, and Florida Attorney General Pat Bondi have all been previously confronted earlier this year at restaurants, movie theaters, book stores, and street corners.
