Former Secretary of State and current Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton shocked and offended Republican rival Donald Trump when she described the racist half of his supporters as a “basket of deplorables” over the weekend, but it turns out Trump is no stranger to “attacking voters.”
The editors of ShareBlue.com, whose CEO is former Hillary Clinton adviser Peter Daou, have put together a video that features Trump literally denigrating exactly half of all American voters, which is the very thing he’s falsely accused Hillary Clinton of doing:
The problem we have right now—we have a society that sits back and says we don’t have to do anything. Eventually, the 50 percent cannot carry—and it’s unfair to them—but cannot carry the other 50 percent…
…We have a tremendous amount of people in this country that don’t want to work. They have no inclination to work.
Hillary Clinton later said she regretted saying it was “half” of Trump’s supporters that she was talking about, but a variety of polls actually place the potential level of support from those she described as “deplorable” even higher. Trump, meanwhile, actually did level his criticism at half of all Americans, not just half of Hillary’s supporters, and did so by making a factually checkable, and inaccurate, claim.
To remove any doubt about Trump’s intentions with these quotes, here is the full context of that Hannity quote, from June 16, 2015, right at the beginning of Trump’s campaign, and that Kasie Hunt interview, from January of 2015:
Ironically, these remarks are much closer in character to the infamous “47%” gaffe, for which Trump insisted, at the time, that Mitt Romney should apologize.
