Football Captain Suspended Over Reported Confederate-Nazi Photo of Him

A football captain at Pace University got suspended after a photo appeared purporting to show him wearing Confederate garb while doing a Nazi salute.

According to the Pace Chronicle, the photo on the right below, reportedly of Tyler Owens, was sent by “an alleged group of African-American students and athletes who said they are not close with Owens and who wish to remain anonymous”:

One senior defended Owens and said, “People are taking a joke out of context, it was just a couple of guys messing around.”

But Pace President Stephen Friedman ended up sending a letter to the campus community saying that Owens has been suspended, saying, “The photograph is highly offensive and contrary to the values of diversity, inclusiveness, and embracing the ethnic and cultural differences among students, faculty, and staff that are deeply held at Pace University and its Athletics Department.”
