GOP Rep. Kelly: Obama Only Stayed in D.C. to Run ‘Shadow Government’

Rep. Mike Kelly, the Republican representative for Pennsylvania’s 3rd congressional district (the northwestern corner of the state), launched a wild attack on former President Obama on Saturday evening at a Republican event, according to an Associated Press report on Friday.

Kelly cast doubt on the Obama family’s announced intentional to stay in the nation’s capital until his youngest daughter graduated from high school. He contended, “I think we ought to pitch in to let him go someplace else, because he is there for one purpose and for one purpose only. And that is to run a shadow government that is going to totally upset the new agenda.”

The AP report also disclosed that “Kelly’s spokesman said Friday the congressman was just ‘sharing the frustration of everyone in the room over how they believe certain Obama administration holdovers’ are trying to upset President Donald Trump’s agenda.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer provided additional details on the controversial remarks in a Friday morning report. The newspaper labeled Kelly “one of President Trump’s biggest boosters in Pennsylvania,” and pointed out that he is a “potential candidate for governor next year.” They specified that the politician made the comments at the annual Lincoln Day dinner of the Mercer County Republican Party.

The Inquirer write-up included a generous amount of snark at Rep. Kelly:

…We can’t say if Kelly made note in his speech of the serious resistance by congressional Republicans to Trump’s agenda. Kelly apparently was too busy to answer [the Inquirer‘s] questions. Sad!

Instead, his office issued this: “Rep. Kelly delivered his remarks at a private meeting to an audience of fellow Republicans. He was sharing the frustration of everyone in the room over how they believe certain Obama administration holdovers within the federal bureaucracy are attempting to upset President Trump’s agenda.”

Message received. In other words, that conspiracy theory was only for loyal Republicans, not for general consumption.
