‘I Can’t Even Remember Who Played’: This Bill Walton SportsCenter Spot Went Hysterically Off The Rails
“[T]onight, we had phenomenal basketball here,” Bill Walton dutifully reported on SportsCenter early Friday after a Pac-12 conference tournament doubleheader. Then, matter-of-factly, he said:
“The first game, I can’t even remember who played or won. But it was super fun.”
Things only got crazier from there. Indeed, Walton’s eight-minute spot on ESPN’s flagship show was truly bonkers.
Among the highlights: Walton teeing off on ESPN’s NCAA Tournament bracket prognosticator Joe Lunardi over his prediction that California, as of right now, will be left out of the field.
Joe’s been living in a tunnel. He sits back there in the snow, and the darkness, and the soot, and the grime. We’re out here in the conference of champions. With so much light, and the rainbows, and the sunrises and the sunsets. They got mountains here called sunrise mountains. They’ve got Red Rock national recreation area. They got Lake Mead national recreation here. They got Death Valley over there. They got the Mojave National Preserve. They got Zion National Park over here. This is where life is. This is where everybody wants to be.
Later, SportsCenter anchor Stan Verrett asked Walton for his take on the hip-hop feud between Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma.
“Hmmmm…” Walton said. “I’m gonna have to ruminate on that just a little bit. Maybe after I spend the rest of the evening at Wolfgang Puck’s.”
