ISIS Allegedly Trying to Sell James Foley’s Corpse for $1 Million

In an attempt to raise capital from its beheadings, ISIS is allegedly looking for people willing to purchase the body of journalist James Foley, the first American killed by the terrorist group earlier this year.

Sources in contact with ISIS told BuzzFeed that the jihadists had contacted Foley’s family, as well as U.S. officials, and offered to sell his remains back to them for $1 million dollars. According to one source, ISIS promised to send a DNA sample as proof, and deliver his remains to Turkey should the deal go through.“They ask for $1 million, and they will send DNA to Turkey, but they want the money first,” he told BuzzFeed. “They will not give the DNA without the money.”

ISIS had attempted to negotiate a ransom for Foley, but the United States, in accordance with longstanding policy, refused to pay one — a tactic that a Free Syrian Army official told BuzzFeed would make the U.S. look bad if they paid for Foley’s body:

Having allowed the U.S. hostages to die in ISIS custody, he reasoned, it would look bad if such a deal succeeded now. Foley’s parents have said that the U.S. government threatened them with prosecution if they paid a ransom for their son’s release. “It will be like a shame for the U.S. government,” the FSA official said. “People will ask why you brought the body but you didn’t bring him when he was alive.”

Foley’s family had no comment, and a White House official told CNN they would investigate the claim, calling ISIS’s goals a “depravity.”
