Jay Carney on Whether Obama Will Take Ed Henry to Tuscany: ‘That’d Be Quite a Buddy Movie’
At the first White House Daily Briefing since the reopening of the federal government, Fox News White House correspondent Ed Henry injected levity into what has been a tense briefing room in recent weeks. Henry asked Carney for a “yes or no answer” to a matter pf pressing importance to the traveling press: “Are we going with the President to Tuscany?”
Henry was referring to comments that President Obama made to pool reporters after a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta. Letta invited the President to return to Tuscany, and the President said he was very eager to make that trip, but was not sure if he “could take as much time as I want” while he is in office. “He will not have to twist my arm to come to Tuscany again some time in the near future,” the President said.
Henry explained that he was joking, and that the President had said he wasn’t sure if he would go to Tuscany while still in office, or after. Another reporter joked “The President invited Ed to Tuscany.”
“That would be quite a buddy movie,” Carney cracked, adding “I know of no current plans to make a trip to Italy, although I would endorse any such plans that might be in the preliminary stage.”
