New video has emerged this morning that appears to show the vehicles of ex-NFLer Will Smith and alleged gunman Cardell Hayes moments before the deadly shooting Saturday night that claimed the life of the former New Orleans Saint.
The surveillance camera from a nearby business appears to show Smith’s car, which he was riding in his wife Raquel Smith, tap the bumper of Hayes’ red truck at a red light. As the truck motions to pull over, Smith seems to pull away. The two cars continue in the same direction, turning the corner and out of frame.
Authorities have been canvassing the scene at the intersection of Sophie Wright Place and Felicity Street in New Orleans, as the clues of the case have been quickly emerging over the last two days. One possible link between Hayes and Smith may stem from a 2006 lawsuit that Hayes brought against police officers in the death of his father; one of those officers is reported to have dined with Smith and his wife Saturday night.
Hayes’ lawyer, John Fuller, firmly believes that the details coming to light will show that it was Smith, and not his client, whose aggression caused the escalating violence.
CNN’s Martin Savage reported that the newly-emerged tape is from an intersection “a few blocks down the street,” from the deadly shooting. CNN also showed personal cellphone video from a bystander from moments after the shooting, in which Smith’s wife can be heard screaming in pain from her own gunshot wounds to the leg.
