Tampa Bay QB Jameis Winston has sent a letter to CNN warning them about their documentary The Hunting Ground, which looks into sexual assault on college campuses.
The documentary was released back in February, and CNN planned a while back to show it on air. CNN president Jeff Zucker defended it back in January. One of the things The Hunting Ground examines is allegations of rape against Winston when he was still at Florida State University.
FSU and the Tallahassee PD investigated the matter and ended up taking no action against Winston. The documentary pinpoints that amid a series of other problems among college campuses that they aren’t taking sexual assault charges seriously enough.
The president of FSU this week released a lengthy statement on the documentary’s “major distortions and glaring omissions” and slams CNN for presenting it as “a documentary rather than an advocacy piece.”
And now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Winston’s attorney is warning he will sue if CNN airs the documentary. Here’s part of what he said in the legal threat to CNN:
We are writing to formally caution CNN that the portions of the film ‘The Hunting Ground’ pertaining to Mr. Winston are false and defamatory to Mr. Winston. We urge CNN to reconsider the reckless decision to proceed with the broadcast of this deeply-flawed documentary in the face of the overwhelming evidence the film’s producers consciously and intentionally failed to adhere to any accepted journalistic standards.
The Hunting Ground airs tomorrow night on CNN at 8:00 pm.
