Obama Orders 350 More Troops to Be Sent into Iraq to Bolster Security

President Obama tonight ordered sending 350 additional troops into Iraq to bolster security at the United States embassy in Baghdad. This is in addition to the 300 military advisors the president sent into Iraq back in June that he maintained would not mean a “return to combat.”

The White House statement reads, in part, “This action was taken at the recommendation of the Department of Defense after an extensive interagency review, and is part of the President’s commitment to protect our personnel and facilities in Iraq as we continue to support the Government of Iraq in its fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).”

And, just like with the June announcement, the White House makes it clear that “these additional forces will not serve in a combat role.”

Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said that this brings the “total forces responsible for augmenting diplomatic security in Iraq up to approximately 820.”
