Police Shot, Killed One of the NY Prison Escapees, Chasing the Other (UPDATE)

 

New York state police have reportedly shot Richard Matt and are currently chasing David Sweat, the two men who escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility earlier this month:

Matt and Sweat were reportedly found by the cops in Malone, New York. According to The New York Times, officers determined they were near the area where they had discovered two hunting cabins where they believed Matt and Sweat to be.

Matt was reportedly killed “in a burst of gunfire.” Authorities had been concerned the two men were headed for the Canadian border.

Update- 4:57 pm EST: The Buffalo News is now reporting Sweat is in a wooded area nearby, believed to be armed, and authorities have canine units pursuing him.

Update- 5:39 pm EST: Multiple reports are saying Matt was shot and killed by a border patrol tactical unit.

Update- 5:47 pm EST: More details continue to emerge about the circumstances of how police tracked them down. According to CNN, Matt had shot at a driver in New York and they called 911. Helicopters have joined the law enforcement hunt.

Update- 7:16 pm EST: ABC News is now reporting there’s an “active gun battle” in the woods where they believe Sweat to be.
