Rock icon and trailblazing artist David Bowie has passed away at the age of 69, according to a press release from his official website. The statement in full published late Sunday night reads:
David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.

Reports indicate that Bowie died after an eighteen month battle with cancer. His career spanned decades in rock and roll, and in a way, many lifetimes. The Thin White Duke transformed his music and persona over and over again, reinventing Rock and Roll along with himself. Bowie was so iconic that in a strange coincidence, The Simpsons featured a reference to his apparently (but not authentically) heterochromatic eyes:
