According to PennLive’s Colin Deppen , students at LVC presented the administration with a list of demands Friday. Among the demands were sensitivity training for staff, bathrooms for those with differing gender identities, and “removing or altering the name ‘Lynch’ in the college’s ‘Lynch Memorial Hall’ due to the word’s racial connotations.”
Needless to say, Lynch Memorial Hall isn’t actually named for the act of murdering blacks without a trial. It’s named for Dr. Clyde A. Lynch, the school’s former president during the Great Depression.
Lynch is the 235rd most common surname in the United States, alongside other common surnames like Dean and Fuller. Wikipedia lists dozens of famous individuals with the last name Lynch, including current Attorney General Loretta Lynch and John Lynch, the first African-American elected Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives.
