To Bret Baier’s Disappointment, the Dalai Lama Knows Nothing About Caddyshack or Golf

On the heels of the Dalai Lama‘s visit to Washington this week to meet with President Barack Obama, Fox News’s Bret Baier got the opportunity to sit down with His Holiness to discuss the state of the world through the eyes of the Tibetan leader. His meetings with United States Presidents are nearly always mired in controversy; Tibet’s estranged relationship with China brings harsh criticism from the country.

“That’s normal,” remarked the Dalai Lama of Tibet’s contentious neighbor to the East.

But at the conclusion of the wide-ranging interview on Special Report Wednesday night, Baier couldn’t resist the urge to ask His Holiness about an American cult classic.

“Last thing… have you ever seen the movie Caddy Shack?” Baier asked the Dalai Lama.

Predictably, his response: “What?” The exchange continued:

BAIER: Caddy Shack, the movie?

THE DALAI LAMA: I don’t know.

BAIER: You don’t know the movie? The part about the Dalai Lama? Have you ever played golf?

BAIER: You’re not a big hitter?

THE DALAI LAMA: Badminton.

BAIER: But not golf?

Bret Baier gave up on his opportune moment to discuss the fan-favorite 1980 film with the man notably spoken about by world traveler Carl Spackler (Bill Murray) in this well-known clip:

“I had to ask you about it,” admitted Baier sheepishly before ending the interview. Watch the above clip from Fox News; the Caddyshack moment comes around the 8:30 mark.
