Trump Hammers Jeff Sessions: ‘I Wish I Picked’ Someone Else For Attorney General

The comment, unlike so many of his previous remarks on Twitter, was brief — only five words. But it cut right to the core.

In a multi-part tweetstorm Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump quoted Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) — speaking about Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

I think what the President is doing is expressing frustration that Attorney General Sessions should have shared these reasons for recusal before he took the job, not afterward. If I were the President and I picked someone to be the country’s chief law enforcement officer, and they told me later, ‘oh by the way I’m not going to be able to participate in the most important case in the office, I would be frustrated too…and that’s how I read that – Senator Sessions, why didn’t you tell me before I picked you…There are lots of really good lawyers in the country, he could have picked somebody else!

And then came the five stinging words from Trump:

“And I wish I did!”

Trump, of course, has made Sessions a favorite Twitter target in recent months. But perhaps never so explicitly has he made clear that he has buyer’s remorse over appointing the former Alabama Senator to his Cabinet.

The irony should not be missed that Trump invoked the words of Gowdy to make his point, when Gowdy — Tuesday on Fox News — dealt a serious blow to the president’s spygate claims by standing behind the FBI’s actions.

“I am even more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got, and it has nothing to do with Donald Trump,” Gowdy said.
