The most powerful speech delivered at either political convention came from Khizr Khan, the father of a Muslim soldier who gave his life to save his comrades, who tore into Donald Trump for his hateful anti-Muslim rhetoric and declared, “Have you even read the United States Constitution?! I will gladly lend you my copy!”
This was a moment that made some conservatives on Twitter feel proud of their country and ashamed of their party, and people were wondering how Trump would react.
Well, Maureen Dowd asked him about it, and this was the ensuing exchange:
On the poignant appearance of Muslim lawyer Khizr Khan and his wife, whose son, Humayun, an Army captain, posthumously received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery after he was killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2004. As his wife, Ghazala, stood silently by his side, Khan held up a copy of the Constitution and asked Trump if he had ever read it and said, “You have sacrificed nothing.”
“I’d like to hear his wife say something.”
And no, I didn’t cut anything off. That was literally his only reaction.
His answers to Michael Bloomberg, Madeleine Albright, Bill O’Reilly, Anthony Weiner, and Byran Cranston were all longer than that.
Ghazala Khan explained on MSNBC last night that it is hard for her to speak publicly about her son Humayun because any time she thinks about him she is too overcome with emotion.
