With the White House embroiled in the scandal over allegations that ex-staffer Rob Porter physically abused two ex-wives and a former girlfriend, President Donald Trump spoke out publicly for the first time on the brewing controversy.
And despite photographs showing one ex-wife with a black eye, and three women in total all alleging physical abuse, the president was both complimentary of Porter and indicated that the accusations may be false.
“We wish him well,” Trump said of Porter. “He worked very hard. I found out about it recently, and I was surprised by it. But we certainly wish him well.”
He continued, “It’s obviously a tough time for him. He did a very good job when he was in the White House, and we hope he has a wonderful career, and hopefully he will have a great career ahead of him.”
Stating that it was “very sad” when the White House heard about the allegations and that Porter is “also very sad now,” Trump added that “he says he innocent.”
“I think you have to remember that, the president declared. “He said very strongly yesterday that he’s innocent. So you’ll have to talk to him about that. But we absolutely wish him well. He did a very good job while he was at the White House.”
