Van Explodes After Crashing Into Australian Conservative Christian Organization

According to reports from Australian media and pictures taken on the scene, a van “exploded” after colliding with the offices of the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) Wednesday.

The ACL is a religious conservative organization headquartered in Canberra and active in anti-gay marriage, anti-Sharia, and pro-life advocacy. Managing Director Lyle Shelton tweeted out an image of the burned van and indicated that everyone from the organization was safe, but the status of the driver is unknown.

Shelton later characterized the explosion as a “car bomb,” although officials have not confirmed the collision was an intentional attack.

In an interview with conservative Australian tabloid The Daily Telegraph, Shelton claimed that police told him that “someone has driven a white van into the [parking lot] of our office and it has been loaded with gas cylinders and then it has been detonated.” Australian Capital Territory Police wouldn’t confirm those details, only telling the Telegraph that “a vehicle was driven towards the front of the building.”

The collision of course comes days after a man intentionally drove a truck into a crowded Berlin Christmas market, in what police believe was an act of terrorism. The perpetrator of that act is still at large and German police are searching for a Tunisian asylum-seeker who goes by multiple aliases.
