McMaster was originally supposed to join the press secretary in order to follow up the White House’s response to a Washington Post article which revealed that President Trump shared sensitive intelligence with the Russian government. Trump has confirmed that the report was correct, tweeting on Tuesday about how he has the legal authority to disclose classified intel.
Trump’s Tweets have drawn particular intrigue because of the implication that they contradict what McMaster said last night in defense of the administration. At the time, McMaster said WaPo‘s story “as reported” was false, and that “at no time, were intelligence sources or methods discussed.”
McMaster’s comments did not directly refute the article’s substance about how classified information had been shared with Russian officials. This latest development occurred shortly after the White House took major blowback after staffers kept shifting their stories in order to explain why Trump decided to fire James Comey as FBI Director.
