Gerrymandering Expert Tells Dan Abrams Republicans Had a ‘Four-Seat Advantage’ Against Democrats — Even Before Texas Gerrymandering
Princeton University Professor and gerrymandering researcher Samuel Wang claimed on Tuesday that even before the recent redistricting in Texas, Republicans held a “four-seat advantage” from gerrymandering against Democrats, contrary to President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) claims.
Reacting on The Dan Abrams Show to Johnson’s claims that Republicans would have a larger majority in the House if it weren’t for “redistricting and gerrymandering in the blue states,” Wang disputed the assertion.
“Claims that the other side gerrymanders are commonplace when made by either Democrats or Republicans, but it’s exactly like what I said about autism and science,” said Wang, who leads the Princeton Gerrymandering Project. “You need to look at all the evidence and you need to find a way to do it so that you can’t tell whether the person bringing the evidence is a Democrat or a Republican.”
He continued, “And I will tell you that at the Princeton Gerrymandering Project, we’ve studied redistricting and unfair maps and fair maps in all 50 states, and as far as we can tell, gerrymandering in this cycle was done by Democrats and Republicans, and that on balance Republicans did it somewhat more.”
Wang revealed, “When you look at all the states put together, Republicans have about a four-seat advantage in terms of relative to fair districting. So relative to a neutral standard for drawing lines, Republicans currently have a few-seat advantage. So I would say that what he [Johnson] said is empirically not true.”
In recent months, Trump has repeatedly called for several states to “redraw” their districts in favor of the Republican Party.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom warned Trump that he would do the same in California to benefit Democrats should redistricting in favor of Republicans go ahead in other states.
