Charlamagne Urges Democrats To Abandon ‘Valiant Effort’ and End Shutdown: ‘Stop Playing Politics With People’s Lives’
Charlamagne Tha God urged Democrats to drop their “valiant effort” and vote to reopen the government as workers are missing paychecks and federal assistance up in the air.
On Wednesday’s The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne told Democrats to follow their Tuesday election victories across the country — including winning New York City’s mayoral race with Zohran Mamdani — by working with Republicans to reopen the government.
“I feel for all those federal workers who have missed two paychecks already, especially when most of them are living paycheck to paycheck,” Charlamagne said. “People are not getting their SNAP benefits. It’s time to reopen the government. I don’t care whose fault it was. Let’s stop playing politics with people’s lives.”
The current shutdown has gone for more than a month with Republicans and Democrats on a standstill over a continuing resolution to fund the government. Democrats are demanding an extension to expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies to get their support, which Republicans have refused. President Donald Trump has urged Republicans to abandon a filibuster rule requiring 60 votes to pass legislation in the Senate, which has faced bipartisan pushback.
The shutdown has led to a reduction in flights as air traffic controllers are going without pay. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) funding is also in an uncertain place as the Supreme Court blocked a lower court ruling this week ordering the administration to fully fund SNAP amid the shutdown.
“It’s time to open the government back up, y’all. Dems, you had a great night last night. The premiums have already gone up,” Charlamagne told Democrats. “They are set for the year. It’s time to move on. We appreciate the fight, the valiant effort, but come on, man. People got rent due. People got childcare to pay for, light bills, car notes.”
