‘God Help Us’: Fox News Contributor Calls House GOP ‘A Dysfunctional Embarrassment’ and Implores Voters, ‘Don’t Nominate Lunatics’

Amid the latest Republican drama in Congress, Fox News contributor Marc Thiessen implored Republicans to nominate candidates who aren’t “lunatics.”

On Friday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) filed a motion to vacate the chair, which means the House will vote on whether to remove Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) from the speakership just as Kevin McCarthy was in October.

Greene’s measure came on the heels of the passage of a $1.2 trillion spending bill that Johnson put on the floor. More Democrats voted for the legislation than Republicans, which rankled Greene.

Also on Friday, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) announced he will leave the House in April. His departure from the narrowly Republican-controlled chamber means that in an otherwise party-line vote, the GOP could afford only one defection.

Appearing on Friday’s Special Report, Thiessen expressed dismay at the state of the House:

God help us. The House Republican majority is a dysfunctional embarrassment. I mean, Speaker Johnson didn’t ask for this job. He stepped up when the House couldn’t elect a replacement for Kevin McCarthy. He’s trying to manage unmanageable conference.

Thiessen then offered a reality check to Republicans such as Greene and other GOP lawmakers who feel as though Johnson did not extract enough concessions from Democrats, who control the Senate and the White House. He also advised Republicans not to nominate nutjobs in primaries:

Republicans need to understand that they control one half of one branch of government and now they’re gonna control it by one vote. You can’t impose your will on the entire government when you have one half of one branch of government with one vote.

I wanna cut spending, too. I wanna do all these things. If you wanna to do that, there’s a simple way to do it. Win elections. Don’t nominate lunatics. Get people who can actually win a general election – not just the Republican primary. Take back the Senate, take back the White House.

Republicans were hoping for a “red wave” in the 2022 midterm elections, but only barely retook the House while losing a seat in the Senate. As Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said ahead of those contests, he had concerns about Republicans’ “candidate quality.”
