‘They Are Not Conservatives’: McCarthy Flames ‘Angry and Chaotic’ GOP Hardliners On His Way Out

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) railed against the Republican members of Congress who voted to oust him as speaker on Tuesday, arguing they did not “have the right” to call themselves conservatives.

After a reporter said McCarthy had been “pushed out by so-called more conservative members,” McCarthy interrupted, “They are not conservatives. They voted against, one, the greatest cut in history that Congress has ever voted for, two trillion. They voted against work requirements. They voted against NEPA reform. They voted against border security.”

He continued:

They don’t get to say they are conservative because they are angry and they are chaotic. That’s not the party I belong to. The party of Reagan was if you believed in your principles, that you could govern in a conservative way. They are not conservatives and they do not have the right to have the title.

During the same speech, McCarthy also hit out against the Democrats for refusing to vote in his favor.

McCarthy was ousted as speaker on Tuesday after Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed a motion to vacate the seat. Eight Republicans, including Gaetz, voted with Democrats to remove McCarthy as speaker of the House after Gaetz accused McCarthy of failing to keep the deal he made with the House Freedom Caucus in January.

McCarthy made a deal with the House Freedom Caucus after he was unable to get enough votes to become speaker at the beginning of the year. Following a tense standoff between Gaetz and McCarthy in January, McCarthy was eventually able to secure the votes of Gaetz and other dissenting Republicans after he promised several concessions.
