Bernie Sanders Announces 2020 Presidential Run: ‘Time to Move the Revolution Forward’
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is running for president in 2020. Sanders announced his intentions during an interview on Vermont public radio, which CNN’s New Day quickly picked up and played for its viewers.
The balance of the clip aired on CNN revealed Sanders spending most of his time hitting President Donald Trump in a remarkably harsh and critical manner. Sanders called him an “embarrassment to our country,” a “pathological liar,” and a “racist, xenophobe, homophobe.” One gets the sense after listening to the clip that Sanders does not hold President Trump in very high esteem.
Sanders then mentioned the “second reason” he is running for the nation’s highest office in 2020 is that he “began the political revolution in the 2016 campaign and now, it’s time to move that revolution forward and make sure that that vision, those ideas are implemented into policy.”
A rush transcript of his statement:
“First of all, I wanted to let the people of the state of Vermont know about this first. What I promise to do is, as I go around the country, is take the values all of us in Vermont are proud of, belief in justice, in community, in grassroots politics, town meetings, that’s what I’m going to carry all over this country. I think the current occupant of the White House is an embarrassment to our country. I think he is a pathological liar everyday. He is telling one lie after another. It gives me no pleasure to say I think he is a racist, xenophobe, homophobe, somebody gaining cheap political points picking on minorities and often undocumented immigrants. I cannot recall certainly in my lifetime or modern history we had a president who actually goes out of his way to try to divide the American people up, based on where we were born or the color of our skin our gender, whatever it may be. I think what a president has to do is bring our people together, not divide us up. That’s certainly one reason I’m running. The second reason is we began the political revolution in the 2016 campaign and now, it’s time to move that revolution forward and make sure that that vision, those ideas are implemented into policy.”
