Cuomo Grills Rick Santorum on Blaming Absent Fathers For Mass Shootings: ‘How Can That Be The Priority?’

Rick Santorum appeared on CNN’s New Day to face a grilling from Chris Cuomo, after the former Pennsylvania senator argued that mass shooters often “come from broken homes without dads.”

Cuomo pressed Santorum on calling for a debate about family instead of gun control in the wake of the massacre at a South Florida high school.

Santorum, who Cuomo noted boasts a lifetime “A” rating from the NRA, said that the “root cause of these problems” are societal factors, including “violence in video games” and “issues in the home.”

He pointed to an “epidemic of young men being raised without dads in the home,” to which Cuomo again pressed him on easy gun access in America.

“How can that not be the priority?” Cuomo asked.

The two then sparred over laws that can be passed to restrict access to guns and curb gun violence, with Santorum conceding that legislation that would have stopped the Parkland school shooter of buying a gun is “worth taking a look at.”

The Pennsylvania senator went on to argue that “gun free zones” such as schools are easy targets for shooters — an argument Cuomo called “disingenuous.”

“To ignore the main idea of why these school shootings happen is silly,” Cuomo said.

“Chris, I don’t think anyone is ignoring it,” Santorum said, noting he wants to also have a conversation about gun control.
