Chris Wallace on Christine Ford’s Testimony: ‘This is a Disaster for the Republicans’
Dr. Christine Ford opened Senate Judiciary Committee hearings into her allegations of sexual assault against embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh with “extremely emotional, extremely raw, and extremely credible” testimony.
This, according to Chris Wallace, part of a Fox News panel that provided instant insight during the first recess that juxtaposed questions asked by sympathetic Democratic senators with Rachel Mitchell, the interrogating proxy for Republican Senators fearful of the negative political optics of older men questioning a woman claiming to be a victim of sexual assault.
Martha MacCallum opened the critique by claiming “You have to believe that the Republican senators are asking themselves whether or not this was a good idea.” Regarding having Mitchell ask the questions, she added “Whether or not [Republican Senators] have robbed themselves of their opportunity to ask pointed questions in a way that perhaps might be more compelling.”
But Wallace’s comments were the most pointed, calling the hearing a “disaster for Republicans.”
“So far, we have heard from six people, Rachel Mitchell three times. Three Democratic Senators.” He added that Mitchell had been treating this like a deposition or court hearing, not the political theater that Senators are used to.
“The Democrats are lending haymakers,” Wallace declared, adding “Rachel Mitchell has so far not landed a glove.”
His assessment appears to be spot on, but reasonable people can see such sports scoring metaphors as quite distasteful for a hearing about a sexual assault, but that is a debate for another day.
