CNN Panel Slams Trump’s Swipe at #MeToo: Of Course He’s ‘Dismissive,’ It Could Still Bring Him Down
CNN’s Brooke Baldwin convened a panel this afternoon that slammed President Donald Trump for his comments taking a swipe at the #MeToo movement.
During an extended riff on Elizabeth Warren yesterday, the President of the United States derisively invoked the “#MeToo generation.”
“The #MeToo movement is about confronting rape, sexual assault, workplace harassment, domestic abuse, bullying, shame, and silence,” Baldwin said. “And it’s about empowering women and men. And Trump dismissed it in a blink.”
CNN contributing writer Anushay Hossain said it should come as no surprise that Trump doesn’t take the #MeToo movement seriously, not just given his own past but the way he defended Rob Porter mere months ago.
“He protects, hires, rewards, and promotes men who abuse women,” she concluded. “And you know what, Brooke? He has to be dismissive of the #MeToo movement. This movement is so powerful, it has brought down some of the most powerful men in the country, and it could still bring down Donald Trump.”
Republican strategist Alice Stewart added that “the last thing he should be doing is mocking it.”
Baldwin pointed out that the White House was recently making a big civility push before bringing up the President’s defense of Congressman Jim Jordan against allegations he turned a blind eye to sexual abuse when he was a wrestling coach at Ohio State.
CNN Politics senior writer Juana Summers said it’s pretty clear the President “has chosen to stand on the side not of survivors,” but of the accused.
