Fox & Friends Presses Trump on Missing Saudi Writer: ‘You Can’t be Killing Washington Post Journalists’
President Donald Trump was pressed in his lengthy Fox & Friends interview Thursday morning about what the U.S. is doing with regards to the disappearance and possible murder of Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post columnist and prominent Saudi dissident who has not been since since walking into the Saudi embassy in Turkey last week.
Fox & Friends host Brian Kilmeade noted Jared Kushner is “very tight” with Saudi crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman, before asking: “What’s it going to take to get some answers?”
“Well we’re looking at it very, very seriously,” Trump said. “I don’t like it at all. Now, you don’t have American citizens, but that in this case doesn’t matter. I don’t like it. I don’t like it with respect to reporters. It is a terrible, terrible precedent. We can’t let it happen.”
“And we’re being very tough and we have investigators over there and we’re working with Turkey, and frankly we’re working with Saudi Arabia,” he continued. “We want to find out what happened. He went in and doesn’t look like he came out. It certainly doesn’t look like he is around.”
Trump went on to say relations with Saudi Arabia are “excellent,” before arguing the country should pay more for U.S. defense.
“But you can’t be killing Americans — you can’t be killing Washington Post journalists,” Kilmeade interjected. “Is everything in jeopardy now? Is that in jeopardy now, good relations with Saudi Arabia?”
“I have to find out what happened,” Trump said. “I do have to find out. We’re probably getting closer than you might think but I have to find out what happened.”
Steve Doocy noted the Washington Post has reported that Mohammed ordered the operation to lure Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia.
“That sounds like it goes right to the top, Mr. President,” he said.
“That would be a very sad thing and we’ll probably know in the very short future,” Trump said. “We have incredible people and incredible talent working on it. We don’t like it. I don’t like it. No good.”
Trump also appeared for an interview on Fox News Wednesday night, were he was reluctant to say he would cut off arms sales to Saudi Arabia over the disappearance and possible murder of Khashoggi.
“I think that would be hurting us,” Trump said. “We have jobs, we have a lot of things happening in this country. We have a country that’s doing probably better economically than it’s ever done before.”
