You aren’t alone if you’re having trouble keeping track of all that happened this week in Washington.
At the top of this afternoon’s The Lead, CNN’s Jake Tapper valiantly attempted to recap this week’s big news while issuing a disclaimer that something else may break within the hour to overtake an already overstuffed news cycle.
“Chaos has been part of how Donald Trump has run his businesses,” he noted. “Chaos has been how he ran his campaign. And chaos has marked how he has run the country. But is there something worse about this week’s maelstrom?”
Noting that allies of the president have told CNN that there’s something different about this week and advisers “are scared” over the president lashing out, Tapper hit on the president imposing tariffs and sending out mixed messages on gun control in the wake of the Parkland shooting.
“It is entirely possible, of course, some other shocking news will break this hour as we head into the dangerous waters of Friday evening,” Tapper stated. “But with that risk, let us take a moment to try to unpack and understand this hot mess of a week.”
And with that, the CNN anchor went on to list off many of the major developments from the past few days, such as Hope Hicks’ resignation, the possibility that H.R. McMaster may step down, the issues surrounding Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, and more.
At the end of the recap, Tapper quoted a friend of the president who said Hicks’ departure could send Trump into a tailspin.
“Of course, that prompts the question,” the CNN host declared. “She hasn’t even left yet — if this isn’t a tailspin, what is it?”
