Michael Cohen Blasts Trump in Hearing Opener: ‘He is a Racist…A Conman…A Cheat’
Michael Cohen opened his public testimony with a bang on Wednesday as he tore into President Donald Trump in remarks to the House Oversight Committee.
Cohen used his opening statement to express regret over his work for Trump and the assistance he provided his former boss throughout the 2016 election. As he talked about his “weakness and misplaced loyalty,” Cohen eventually said he was “ashamed that I chose to take part in concealing Mr. Trump’s illicit acts rather than listening to my own conscience.”
“I am ashamed because I know what Mr. Trump is,” Cohen said. “He is a racist. He is a conman. He is a cheat.”
Cohen voiced his claim that Trump knew Roger Stone spoke to Wikileaks as the organization prepared to release hacked DNC emails to damage Hillary Clinton. He also took a moment to apologize to Congress, saying he did so because he was protecting Trump at the time by falsifying the details surrounding the negotiations for Trump Tower Moscow.
“I hope my appearance here today, my guilty plea, and my work with law enforcement agencies are steps along a path of redemption that will restore faith in me and help this country understand our president better.”
Cohen went on to say that Trump “did not directly tell me to lie to Congress” about the Moscow project, but “made clear” he wanted Cohen to lie about it. Since Trump would “go out and lie” to the American people about this, Cohen explained, “in his way, he was telling me to lie.”
“Mr. Trump knew of and directed the Trump Moscow negotiations throughout the campaign and lied about it. He lied about it because he never expected to win the election…And so I lied about it too, because Mr. Trump had made clear to me…that he wanted me to lie. And he made it clear to me because his personal attorneys reviewed my statement before I gave it to Congress.”
