Mayor Pete Pressed on Late-Term Abortion During Fox News Town Hall: ‘I Trust Women to Draw the Line’
Mayor Pete Buttigieg‘s comments on abortion and women’s bodies drew strong applause during the Fox News Town Hall Sunday night.
It started when a member of the audience asked the Democratic hopeful if he supported a women’s right to have an abortion regardless of their zip code.
Buttigieg responded: “I believe that the right of a woman to make her own decisions, about her reproductive health and her body is a national right. I believe it is an American freedom, and I believe that should be enjoyed by women everywhere.”
The audience applauded.
Fox News’s Chris Wallace, then asked a follow-up on late-term abortion, a focus of conservative ire and talking points.
“There has been a lot of focus about the states that have voted to restrict women’s rights, but been a movement in other direction, New York State, also this year, passed a new law which significantly increases a woman’s right to an abortion. It used to be the exception was after 24 weeks to protect the life of a woman, now the new law is to protect the health of a woman, which is a much more lenient standard, I guess the question is, do you believe at any point in pregnancy whether 6 or 8 or 24 weeks, there should be any limit on a woman’s right to have an abortion?” Wallace asked.
Buttigieg did not take the bait.
“I think that dialogue has got so caught up on where you draw the line,” Buttigieg replied. “That we have gotten away from the fundamental question of who gets to draw the line. And I trust women to draw the line when it is their own body.”
“Just to be clear, you say that you would be okay with a woman well into third trimester deciding to abort her pregnancy?” Wallace pressed.
“These hypotheticals are set up to provoke,” Buttigieg replied.
Then after Wallace said that it represents 6000 women a year, Buttigieg noted that was still less than one percent prompting more applause.
“Let’s take ourselves let’s put ourselves in shoes of a woman in the situation, if it is that late in your pregnancy that means almost by definition, have you been expecting to carry it to term, we are talking about women who perhaps chosen a name, women who have purchased a crib, families that get most devastating medical news of their lifetime, something about health or the life mother that forces them to make an impossible choice,” he said before noting the bottom line — at least for him — is that the decision would not be made better “medically or morally” if “the government is dictating how the decision should be made.”
