Scalise Gives Heartfelt Thanks to Officers Who Saved His Life: ‘You Are My Hero’

As House Majority Whip Steve Scalise returned to congress today, he made sure to thank the police officers who saved his life during the congressional baseball shooting.

In June, Scalise was shot by James Hodgkinson while practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game. A firefight between the shooter and Capitol Police Officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey broke out in which the two agents fought off the shooter, all while sustaining their own gunshot wounds.

In thanking them, Scalise referred to the two special agents who serve in his security detail as “true angels” and “family.”

“First place I want to go to thank true angels along the way starts with the United States Capitol Police,” said Scalise. “Let me tell you, if they didn’t act so quickly — and even after being shot both themselves — continue to engage the shooter and ultimately [get] him down, [they] not only saved my life, but saved the lives of a lot of other people who are in this chamber today.”

While Giner could not be at the speech, Bailey received the highest of praise from Scalise in front of a crowd of applauding lawmakers. “David, you are my hero, you saved my life. Thank you so much,” said Scalise.

The GOP congressman from Louisiana has been recovering from his gunshot wounds for the past four months. However, today his office announced that he is officially back.
