Trump Continues Claim Federal Employees Support Shutdown: ‘Look At Social Media’
President Donald Trump doubled down on his dubious claim that the government shutdown over wall funding has support from federal employees, telling reporters today that supporters on “social media” are praising his stand, despite personal setbacks caused by the Washington deadlock.
“Many of those people that you’re talking about — so humanly the way you express it — but many of those people that you talk about are on my side,” the president said after a reporter asked him about federal employees who have been furloughed or are being forced to without compensation. “I’ve had so many people, the beautiful thing is with social media, the world can write to you, and you take a look at social media, and so many of those people are saying, ‘It’s very hard for me, it’s very hard for my family, but Mr. President, you’re doing the right thing. Get it done.'”
He continued the claim, calling these supporters “patriarchs,” when he meant “patriots,” noting that
“they love our country, and they want to see it be done.”
Trump previously made the same claim on Sunday, telling reporters that “many of those people that won’t be receiving a paycheck, many of those people agree 100 percent with what I’m doing.” Last Friday, he also said that most “people that you think are upset — and certainly they’re not thrilled — but they say, ‘Sir, do the right thing. We need border security.’ And these are people that won’t be getting paid.”
The president has not provided any real evidence backing up claims of such support among impacted federal employees.
