Wilbur Ross Leaves Chuck Todd Bewildered Over Whether Trump Will Stand by Tariff Proposal
Chuck Todd faced off with Commerce Sec. Wilbur Ross today on the new tariffs President Trump announced on steel and aluminum.
Todd noted the serious opposition on the right to this move and asked, “Should we believe this is actually going to happen?”
“Well, I think you have to take the president at his word,” Ross responded. “He made campaign promises. He’s pretty well proven so far he intends to keep his campaign promises.”
Todd asked to clarify if this is happening “the way he said it.” Ross told him, “Whatever his final decision is is what will happen.”
Todd said, “Meaning this isn’t a done deal.”
Ross explained, “I didn’t say that. I just said what he has said he has said. If he says something different, it’ll be something different. I have no reason to think he’s going to change.”
Todd started to laugh a bit in disbelief and asked, “What does this mean? You just said, ‘Well, he may say this, and he may say that.'”
Ross insisted, “I said he is the one who makes the decision. He has made a decision at this point, 25 and 10. If he for some reason should change his mind, then it’ll change. I have no reason to believe he’s going to change his mind.”
Todd later tweeted about that remarkable exchange:
Perhaps this should be a pinned tweet: Commerce Sec Ross after I asked if it’s possible POTUS could rescind his tariff proposal: “Whatever his final decision is, is what will happen. What he has said he has said; if he says something different, it’ll be something different”
