Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman will take up a paid role as a columnist at The Telegraph, it was revealed Thursday.
An advisory letter issued to Braverman was published by the Committee On Business Appointments noting to the former Tory Cabinet minister that she should wait three months from the end of her ministerial role to take on the role. Braverman has written columns before and applied to the committee to say that she wished to sign a contract.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak asked Braverman to step down from her position on November 13, 2023. The move followed after Braverman authored an article in The Times accusing Metropolitan Police chiefs of bias in their handling of pro-Palestine protests.
Braverman’s relationship with Downing Street had already been tenuous, following her claim that being homeless was a “lifestyle choice” and her outspoken criticism of the Prime Minister and his plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.
The move comes as The Telegraph Group changes ownership under a proposed buy over. The ongoing purchase was submitted by RedBird IMI, a joint venture between Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital and International Media Investments (IMI) of Abu Dhabi, that is run by Zucker.
Concern over the buy over from Braverman’s former cabinet colleagues resulted in a probe initiated by Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer and a move by the Tory government to ban foreign state majority ownership in UK media assets, since IMI is funded primarily by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE’s vice-president.
