Adam Schiff: Dems Will Pick Up Trump Oversight That GOP ‘Completely Abdicated’ and ‘Obstructed’

House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) was largely relegated to the sidelines during the committee’s Russia investigation. But as a result of Democratic victories on Tuesday night, Schiff now stands to chair that committee. And he suggested that the committee could soon resume its work.

Appearing on MSNBC, Schiff signaled that the committee plans to increase its activity level in the area of presidential oversight.

“We also intend to make sure that the oversight role that the Republicans so completely abdicated, the Congress once again undertakes and does so responsibly,” Schiff said.

Schiff blasted Republicans and President Donald Trump for their attacks on the FBI and said the intelligence committee has some fences to mend.

“We’re going to look at the work that the GOP obstructed on our committee,” Schiff said. “And it was really worse than abdicating the responsibility of the committee. The majority went further — to be complicit in the president’s attacks on the independence of the Justice Department, on the men and women of the FBI, on our intelligence community. So we also need to restore the relationship between our committee and the intelligence community and law enforcement.”

Schiff then mentioned a wild card — the outcome of special counsel Robert Mueller‘s probe — and seemed to tease news from that investigation soon.

“We’ll have to see what Bob Mueller has been able to do, and what Bob Mueller has been able to say — either via indictment or via report. And that will also guide what we intend to do in our committee,” he said.
