Hillary Clinton: ‘You Cannot Be Civil With a Political Party That Wants to Destroy What You Stand For’

Defeated 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton made quite the declaration about engaging with political opposition.

Sitting down with CNN International’s Christiane Amanpour in Oxford, England, the former Secretary of State suggested that peaceful dialogue between Democrats and Republicans is impossible since Republicans want to “destroy” what her party stands for.

“You cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about,” Clinton said. “That’s why I believe, if we are fortunate enough, to win back the House and/or the Senate, that’s when civility can start again. Until then, the only thing Republicans seem to recognize and respect is strength.”

She then accused Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and President Donald Trump of “demeaning” the confirmation process of now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and “attacking” Dr. Christine Blasey Ford as well as “women who were speaking out.”

“I remember Republican operatives shutting down the voting in Florida in 2000. I remember the swift voting of John Kerry. I remember the things that even the Republican Party did to John McCain in 2000. I remember what they did to me for 25 years,” Clinton continued. “The falsehoods, the lies, which unfortunately people believe because Republicans have put a lot of time, money, and effort in promoting them. So when you’re dealing with an ideological party that is driven by the lust for power, that is funded by corporate interests who want a government that does its bidding- you can be civil, but you can’t overcome what they intend to do unless you win elections.”

Earlier this morning, President Trump told reporters that Clinton “just doesn’t get it” in reaction to her comments calling Kavanaugh’s swearing-in ceremony a “political rally,” adding that it’s why “she lost.”
