Walmart, Amazon, and Sears all had to take down posters from their sites this past weekend that contained the message “Arbeit macht frei,” a Nazi Germany-era phrase that translates to “work makes you free.”
The posters depicted the phrase on the main gate of Dachau, one of the most infamous concentration camps of the time. The poster was available on all three of the aforementioned sites, though it was third-party marketplace sellers that were actually selling them.
Walmart put out a statement saying, “We were horrified to see that this item was on our site. We sincerely apologize, and worked quickly to remove it.” Amazon and Sears also took down the poster.
