Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson called Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas an “Uncle Tom” over the weekend, and when confronted about the remark by CNN’s Dana Bash, Thompson stood by it and said “it’s the truth” based on what side Thomas has aligned himself with in court decisions.
Thompson argued that Thomas’ decisions “have been adverse to the minority community, and the people I represent have a real issue with an African American not being sensible to those issues.” He brought up issues like voter ID and affirmative action and said it’s a problem to have “someone in the court who’s African American and not sensitive to that.”
He also thinks President Obama gets more “venom” directed his way than presidents before him, which may partly have to do with race. Bash grilled him on what exactly Republicans have said to warrant charges of race-based attacks, and Thompson pointed to Joe Wilson calling Obama a liar during the State of the Union as an example.
