Medal Of Honor Recipient Has But One Request: To Have A Beer With Obama

President Barack Obama knows full well that there is little in this life that cannot be resolved or celebrated with a cold, preferably alcoholic beverage (See: “The Beer Summit.”) Today, in fact, Obama took some time to share a couple of beers with United States Marine Corps veteran Dakota Meyer on the patio outside the Oval Office. Meyer, as you may be aware, is set to receive the Medal of Honor tomorrow for this actions during the Battle of Ganjga.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney Tweeted earlier this evening that the idea was actually a special request by Meyer:

Pretty sweet.

I wonder, now, what Obama’s beer of choice might be.

Don’t forget to bring $35,800 for price of admission .

  • Richie

This is going to become a common request. Obama has done well in foreign policy in contrast to his predecessor who bequeathed to America the two longest, most poorly managed wars in the country’s history. Expect more war heroes in the future wanting to share a beer with the president who caught Bin Laden, unwound the wars in the Middle East among other military triumphs.

  • Anonymous

    A modest request.

  • Richie

I can’t believe you confused Tollbooth Perry and our successful war president.

The right can say all they want about the President but they can’t mess with his record on foreign policy. He made Bush look like the wimp his father was.

FYI:  The first living Marine to receive our nation’s
highest award for valor in 41 years (since the Vietnam War) is to be presented
the Medal by President Barack Obama in a ceremony at the White House.

Dakota Meyer displayed… conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the repeated risk
of his life above and beyond the call of duty as a member of Marine Embedded
Training Team 2-8, Regional Corps Advisory Command 3-7, in Kunar Province,
Afghanistan, on 8 September 2009. When the forward element of his combat team
began to be hit by intense fire from roughly 50 Taliban insurgents dug-in and
concealed on the slopes above Ganjgal village, Corporal Meyer mounted a
gun-truck, enlisted a fellow Marine to drive, and raced to attack the ambushers
and aid the trapped Marines and Afghan soldiers. During a six hour fire fight,
Corporal Meyer single-handedly turned the tide of the battle, saved 36 Marines
and soldiers and recovered the bodies of his fallen brothers. Four separate
times he fought the kilometer up into the heart of a deadly U-shaped ambush.
During the fight he killed at least eight Taliban, personally evacuated 12
friendly wounded, and provided cover for another 24 Marines and soldiers to
escape likely death at the hands of a numerically superior and determined foe. On his first foray his lone vehicle drew machine gun, mortar, rocket grenade
and small arms fire while he rescued five wounded soldiers. His second attack
disrupted the enemy’s ambush and he evacuated four more wounded Marines.
Switching to another gun-truck because his was too damaged they again sped in
for a third time, and as turret gunner killed several Taliban attackers at
point blank range and suppressed enemy fire so 24 Marines and soldiers could
break-out. Despite being wounded, he made a fourth attack with three others to
search for missing team members. Nearly surrounded and under heavy fire he
dismounted the vehicle and searched house to house to recover the bodies of his
fallen team members. By his extraordinary heroism, presence of mind amidst
chaos and death, and unselfish devotion to his comrades in the face of great
danger, Corporal Meyer reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the
highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

Unwound the wars in the Middle East? You obviously don’t pay attention very much, and will just believe what you want to believe to justify your irrational love for a man and his party. Not that Bush did a good job, but the idea that the Middle East/South Asia is a mix of popsicles and butterflies shows you to know very little, and are talking out of your ass. You honestly think Osama Bin laden is somehow the only problem facing the Middle East? And now all the problems are over now? How sad…

A medal of honor award winner asks for a beer with the president.

The president asks for a half a trillion dollars for his re election.

Honorable person in the article here, you make the call?

Obama hasn’t wound anything down. He’s increased the presence in Afghanistan, and in Iraq, he has simply followed the Status of Forces Agreement that Bush negotiated with the Iraqis. That agreement has all of our troops out of Iraq at the end of this year. Obama is currently trying to extend our presence in Iraq, which really can’t be construed as a winding down.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S.-Iraq_Status_of_Forces_Agreement

Other military accomplishments? Like bombing Gadhaffi out of power? Why did we do that, exactly?

But I bet you had no problem with Bush Pioneers and money for access.

  • Bob

I find it funny that conservatives have such a problem with the fact that Chris Matthews, a commentator, has stated that he likes and supports the president. They act like its some ethical lapse, but have no problem with the entire FOX line-up advocating for and showing bias for the GOP.

  • Bob

Because George W. Boosh ran for president for free, apparently. Never raised a dime in their Bizarro universe.

  • Bob

as all White House photographers usually do, he documents the president’s activities.

Gotta say, I’m more used to seeing blind partisanship on the right than the left on this board, but this is a case of the latter.  Obama has done very little to unwind the war in Afghanistan – He’s escalated it.  Yes, he gave the order to after Osama, but that was more Intelligence & Special Forces than either Bush or Obama.  He also has a regrettable record of extending Bush’s woeful policy on Guantanamo.

I’ll likely support his re-election, but it doesn’t help anything to turn a blind eye to many important areas the man has failed to fix the Bush wreckage.

  • Anonymous

Good point! Because Dubya, Clinton, Bush I, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon and every president since the invention of the daguerreotype would have done the exact same thing!

There’s plenty to criticize the man for, but this is a sad, unhinged stretch.

  • Wassup

His foreign policy? Cough, cough. All the dope did was “apologize for us to muslim conutries. The E8 countries got on his ass to stop spending, which dems can’t seem to stop doing! Obamas wife violated “do not touch the Queen” understood policy. Obama began his toast over a music piece that he was suppose to wait to end, embarrassing our country. He didn’t ask Congress to begin a war with Lybia. He signed a pact with Russia, that the US won’t use nukes against coutries that do not possess them themselves! wtf!

No, by all means, let’s raise taxes to 100%. Because raising taxes, as your President and your party claims, creates jobs.

I am a Liberal and I agree – where is the anti war coverage?  Why is staying in two wars suddenly okay with President Obama?  Obama is a conservative by my point of view and I am very disappointed he has not brought our troops home among other things.

(of course one could point out that the pro war conservatives are hardly lauding Obama’s continuation of the Bush policies across the board.)

  • Bob

No, politicizing the troops is dressing up in a flight suit, strutting across an aircraft carrier deck and using soldiers as props.
Having a photo taken of a friendly White House meeting with a Medal of Honor winner is not. The ones politicizing it are the wingnuts who try to turn everything into a political football.

  • HawkCW4

Obama does not deserve to be in the same company as this young warrior.  Will be interesting to see if Obama salutes this Hero.   Well done Marine.

  • HawkCW4

Times change and so do solutions, except for Liberals.   The only solution they know is TAX and SPEND.
For Obama to even say the word tax in times of no jobs is stupidity at its lowest form and Obama knows that depth well.   The Liberal way is more gov, more tax, spend more.  all those things that kill jobs,  put us deeper in debt and will eventually kill the economy beyond resurection.

    The Hill –
    — The White House initially denied a request by Rep. Duncan Hunter
(R-Calif.) to attend a Medal of Honor ceremony for a fellow Marine Corps
and Afghanistan war veteran, a congressional source said.Hunter
first learned last week about plans for President Obama to award former
Marine Cpl. Dakota Meyer the Medal of Honor during a Thursday ceremony
at the White House. Hunter formally requested to attend the ceremony
earlier this week, but the White House said no, the congressional source
    said.
The source said the lone reason for the denial given during
a brief phone call from a White House official was because “the room
    was already full.”
An hour after The Hill contacted the White
House about the apparent snub, however, Hunter’s office said an
invitation was extended shortly after 12 p.m.
A White House spokesman has yet to respond to that inquiry.
Joe Kasper, Hunter’s press secretary, said the lawmaker will attend the ceremony.
    “It’s
surprising that the White House would first deny a request from the
only Marine combat vet of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in Congress
to attend the award ceremony — especially when this time around it’s a
Marine receiving the honor,” Kasper said.

while we needed to go into Afghanistan and it was widely accepted we should be in Iraq, being in Iraq was CLEARLY a mistake (20/20 hindsight). Unfortunately, having gone in we couldn’t immediately pull out — but need to do so now / soon!

  • Joepalooka

it’s not that a liberal-leaning media member expressees ‘like’ for President Obama it’s his totally fawning nature that undermines his usual credibility. 2 Good Guys.  Well above the common masses.

I think you are mixing the president up with the MERCK guy – Governor Perry.  He can’t be bought for $5,000 but you can give $10,000 a try.

  • Gorgegirl

Somebody had to apologize to those poor people for George and Cheney taking our men and women – invading Iraq without any provocation.  Sure, Saddam wasn’t a Mr NiceGuy, but then there were lots of other leaders around the world who weren’t/aren’t either.  The best way is to allow the people to make an ovature to toppling the dictator and asking for your help like they did in Libya.  You don’t have to take ownership of the conflict then – the rebels do.  It is their country if they destroy part of it, it will be theirs to rebuild.
When George W Bush ran for president back in 2000, he kept saying he was completely against “nation building” and then see what he did. He bogged us down in 2 countries for over 10 years.

  • Gorgegirl

Maybe you need to check it out, but we are reducing our forces in Iraq.  I think the discussion was how many we need to leave there to protect the “huge expensive embassy that the Bush administration built”.

  • Gorgegirl

We bombed Libya  because the rebels were begging us to help them because Gaddafi was going to murder them.  The United States took the led for the bombing for FIVE days and then NATO took over.  The fact is that the US has expertise in those matters that the other NATO countries didn’t have.  NATO has now taken over.

The president didn’t have a choice as to completely closing Guantanamo after the republicans determined that he would not be able to bring the detainees into the US.  That was clear obstructionist on their part and Guantanamo is a recruiting tool for Al Qaeda and other extremist groups.

I didn’t want to see anything esculated in Afghanistan and have hopes that they will begin the drawdown as soon as possible.  I am concerned about the impact it will have on the women in Afghanistan though.

Nice work! You definitely earn your L’il Dittohead’s merit badge for making a straw man argument. For starters, Obama is a tepid corporate centrist (you will no doubt be shocked to see how much Wall Street and Corporations end up giving to the re-election treasure chest of a man you’ve been told to believe is a Marxist/Muslim/Anarchist. ) So don’t paint me as a rabid supporter.

Beyond that, the insane, crazy commie tax hike being proposed is back to 39.6% on the top bracket. Nuts, huh? Almost as bad as those evil top rates of 50% that was the rate under all but one year of Reagan.

Also, find me the quote where I say, or “my” president says that raising taxes creates jobs? The reality is that in economic contraction and early recovery, if the Consumer isn’t spending, and business isn’t spending, often the government becomes the spender of last resort. That’s the only way we got out of the Great Depression: The WPA, then the build up for WWII. But to do that, you either deficit spend or pull the top tax brackets back off the absolute floor.

But thanks for your thoughts, and keep that badge shiny, you earned it!

  • Anonymous

Well, the Austrian school of economics would tend to agree with you. The Keynesian school, which says that if consumers aren’t spending, and business isn’t spending, you have to have government spur demand by spending. The last 11 years in this country have been a lab test to see if tax cuts spur job growth. They don’t. Not at all. Completely taking any moral component out of the equation, the further down the socio-economic ladder you inject stimulus, that faster it is going to be spent, hence the faster the stimulus hits the economy.

And please, lets not pretend that the GOP doesn’t spend as fast or faster than the Dems. The scary part is that they demand tax cuts and spend. Please.

  • renagle

Hahaha, oh that is rich. “Hi, I’m Barack Obama: the successful war president.”  You are right in one respect that he loves war. He added a 3rd (and it’s unpaid) and ramped up drone attacks on sovereign countries like Pahky-stan, enhanced rendition and kept Gitmo open. Now, I am not necessarily disagreeing with these items I’ve listed, but find it the height of democrat psychosis to now be supportive of the Bush doctrine and then put it on steroids! God bless the bravery of the soldier and if he wants to spend time with Barry, who could criticize him for that? He is the POTUS even if he is a clown.

  • Anonymous

He requested his fellow marines be invited to ‘share’ the honor as well, since he was part of a team.  Kind of a key part of the story that is lost here. You also COULD have mentioned that he kept going back, AFTER he was shot and saved both US AND Afghanistan soldiers lives.

And of course, had a beer with the President….

And like an honorable man, the President granted his request.  Did you have a problem when Bush did not attend one funeral for any of the men and women he sent to die for a lie.  Bush didn’t even have the decency to attend one plane that returned the remains from his wars.  I’ll take President Obama over the last guy any day.
