Media Matters Highlights Tancredo’s Anti-Obama Screed, Ignores McCain Bashing

File this in under “selective reporting.” Media Matters breathlessly reported how Rep. Tom Tancredo opened the Tea Party Convention in Nashville yesterday with remarkably harsh words for both the American electorate and President Obama. What they neglected to report was that he also shared similarly harsh words for GOP nominee John McCain.

In light of the criticism Media Matters frequently directs towards Fox News for it’s “unbalanced coverage”, it’s particularly interesting that they only highlight this part of Tancredo’s rant, perhaps because his solely railing against Obama better fits the binary narrative some love to promote.

While Tancredo’s inflammatory words were likely designed to get this sort of attention, at least his speech was somewhat bipartisan in its vitriol. Making “matters” worse – the story was picked up by Huffington Post, who reported only part of the comments:

Former Congressman and 2008 Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo told an audience on Thursday at the Tea Party Convention in Nashville that “people who could not even spell the word ‘vote’, or say it in English, put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House.”

“His name,” Tancredo said, “is Barack Hussein Obama.”

Tancredo delivered the opening keynote speech at the convention where several hundred Tea Party conservatives have gathered.

“So the race for America is on right now. The president and his left-wing allies in Congress are going to look at every opportunity to destroy the Constitution before we have a chance to save it,” Tancredo told the delegates. “So put your running shoes on. Because I’ll tell you, I’ve heard we need a revolution. My friends, we already had it. We lost. I mean, what happened to us in that last election was a revolution.”

Just after these comments, Tancredo then launched into a rant against McCain and the GOP establishment:

If McCain had been elected, Neo-Cons would be writing flattering editorials in a Weekly Standard and Wall Street Journal. Congressman Gutierrez & President McCain would have been posing in a Rose Garden with big smiles as ay received accolades from La Raza for having finally passed an amnesty. President Calderone and President McCain would be toasting the elimination of those pesky things called borders, and major steps would have been taken toward the creation of a North American union.

If McCain had been elected, Sarah Palin would not be free to tell it like it is. The Republican congress would never be voting in 100% opposition to left-leaning legislation as they are today. There would be no Republican in Ted Kennedy’s seat in Massachusetts.

If McCain had been elected, America would be moving down the same collectivist path, and there would have been no Tea Party, no 9/12ers, no rally for America on the Washington Mall and we would not be here.

To truly appreciate the effect of the selective edits, one need first watch the Media Matters clip below:

Now view the clip of Tancredo speaking as it aired on CNN (note – the jump cut in the middle was done by CNN editors.)

Good for you Mediaite! someone needs to show this bias on the left! We who support Tea Party movement are NOT happy with Dems or Repubs.

  • dhg

Biased media gives biased coverage. As an independent I have given up and any outlet with a bias because I’m tired of being spun.Being partisan on a blog means no matter what your bias is you will lie to us all.

  • the visionary

    good reporting, colby

  • liberalontogeny

Must be a Media Matters mistake. Selective editing is what they accuse Fox for doing. I’m sure they will correct to include the McCain bashing portion promptly.

On another note, I have to say. I was taken back by ex-Rep Tancredo’s comments about ‘civics literacy test’ and inability to spell vote or say vote in English. I’m assuming with Tancredo’s legislative history that’s is a shot at illegal immigrants. Tancredo offered no evidence that there was ample illegal immigrants who actually voted to bridge the gap between Pres. Obama and McCain total votes, let alone Electorial votes.

‘civic literact test’ alone, if you’re American citizen and you qualify, you can vote regardless if you know your American civics or not.

  • Ted

A horrible, vile oversight. After all, we know that John McCain is a Progressive. Glenn Beck said so.

  • sarainitaly

File this in under “selective reporting.”

the entire site can be filed under selective reporting.

I agree with liberalontogeny about Tancredo’s comments. They need to tone down the few old white dudes who go off like that. Although, the left has called McCain/Hillary/teaparty supporters and voters racists, teabaggers, and worse.

Thanks Colby for pointing this out!

  • tjl

This post doesn’t make sense, sorry. And neither do the comments above. If I gave a speech and said Obama is racist and McCain is also a racist, the headline should be “tjl is an idiot.” Who cares what was left off in this report. Sure, Tancredo is a dick to both sides, but the overall sentiment is that he’s a dick. Right?

To be fair, I don’t see anywhere on the Media Matters clip about Tancredo and “Republicans” making anti-Obama remarks. Aren’t we supposed to believe that the Tea Party has no “party” affiliation. So of course he went after McCain. But is that a big deal? They got the gist of it — Tancredo makes anti-immigrant remarks.

I find it interesting that the Tea Party likens themselves as fighting against “tyranny” while at the same time telling people who don’t speak like they do (in a country founded and built by immigrants) or worship the same way they do, to “go somewhere else.”

  • Ted

tjl – I understand what you are saying. Sure Trancredo’s “dick-ness” qualities, if you will. and his borderline personality disorder makes him a perfect fit for the Tea Bag movement, at the same time you can’t blame him for going after that Progressive, Marxist, Socialist and war hero, John McCain…his “dick-ness” compels him to do it.

  • roxsteady

In 1965 blacks were granted the right to vote, so Southern Dixiecrats were trying to discourage blacks in the South from voting by forcing them to take a Literacy Test, knowing that many couldn’t read or write and were uneducated. This “Literacy Test” was an attempt to circumvent the voting rights act. It’s a term that ‘s steeped in racism and segregation. This is why those of us who know what that means, also know that Tom Tancredo knows what it means too.

  • roxsteady

By the way, right after I posted my previous comment, Rachel Maddow covered this very same topic. Great timing.

  • TeaPartyAmerican

I think the point of this article is not if Tancredo is a bomb thrower, which he clearly is. It is pointing out how Media Matters edited it. One of Media Matters big issues with Fox is how they ‘edit out of context’. I think Mediaite made that case MM did the same.

  • sueNaustin

I don’t think that Media Matters is interested in Tom Tancredo fragging John McCain (Republican vs Republican rhetoric). It is not MM’s thing.

Mr. Tancredo doesn’t like either Obama or McCain because they want to try to do something realistic about illegal immigration instead of just letting it go on and on forever.

  • sueNaustin

Oh, and don’t even try to wind Tom Tancredo up about George W. Bush.

Are you kidding me? It’s news that Media Matters isn’t fair? Where the f*ck have you been? They pull this crap all the time. I do appreciate their video clip library though. I can always count on them to compile the best lines of the day from my favorite Conservative pundits.

    >I don’t think that Media Matters is interested in Tom Tancredo fragging John McCain (Republican vs Republican rhetoric). It is not MM’s thing.

Agreed. Why the hell should Media Matters care if a conservative bashes a conservative?

Just came over from Daily Beast where the Tancredo clip is prominent – and if you can’t see the difference in what Tancredo said about Obama as to McCain you’ve got shit between your ears. First he talks about a civics literacy test for voters in sarcastic terms (while speaking to a collection of ignorance in the form of a Tea Party convention), . He lies about a so-called ‘nanny state’, lies about Obama being ‘committed socialist,’

Tancredo is a despicable moron – tell him I said so and most Americans reject his hate, his ignorance and the chicken produced fertilizer he’s selling. And he took no significant shots at McCain and he’s stupid enough to support Palin. Now there’s where a test for intelligence is required.

  • JamesA1102

The only one who is guilty of “selective reporting” here is Colby Hall. Not just selective but dishonest reporting.

First, Media Matters didn’t breathlessly report anything as Mr. Hall contends. As the link above shows they merely reported a quote from Tancredo’s speech without any commentary. That quote, which Mr. Hall omitted, was:

“TANCREDO: And then, something really odd happened, mostly because I think that we do not have a civics literacy test before people can vote in this country. People who could not even spell the word “vote,” or say it in English, put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House, name is Barack Hussein Obama.”

Second, it isn’t an anti-Obama screed. It is a racist comment about people who voted for President Obama.

Third, Mr. Hall indulges in a false equivalency. The comment about voters for President Obama was far more inflammatory than any of the comments regarding Senator McCain. While the comments regarding Senator McCain were unfair and inflammatory, the simple fact is McCain is only a Senator while Obama is the President. It is a common practice in the News media to focus only on the President simply because he is the President. And like it or not McCain is not the President.

Shame on you Dan Abrams for allowing this sort of dishonest reporting on your site.

  • tjl

Chris Jones, you’re still missing the point with your partisan blinders on. How aren’t they fair? Where in that clip did it say that the Tea Party or Tancredo are out for Obama/Democratic blood. The idea of the clip is that Tancredo is a racist prick. Not sure what I’m missing about it. And yes, they edited out a shit load of stuff. Or, if you’d like to correct me, did Tancredo speak for four minutes — a tribe about Obama, one about McCin, drop the mic and I’m outta here! So, yes, it was edited.

And the other thing you miss is that no one is saying that MM doesn’t have liberal leanings. Just like no right-minded person would say that Fox News isn’t a conservative outlet.

  • disgusted

NEITHER “right’ or “wrong/left” – whatever – NEITHER!

  • stoogedude

Media Matters combats conservative misinformation. So I think that MM should have aired the McCain bashing, because Tancredo assumes that progressives or those they perceive as progressives are going to completely destroy America as we know it, that our freedoms would be lost under a progressive President. But I think that MM has no interest in Repub. against Repub. It says itself that it fights conservative misinformation. So, Colby, of course it’s not going to talk about McCain bashing. Would MM’s conservative counterpart, the Media Research Center, air a progressive attacking a progressive? Perhaps, but only to take pleasure in seeing progressives attack each other. So to see MM not mention McCain bashing is no surprise, although I think they should mention the anti-Progessive element in Tancredo’s despicable speech.

  • shootfromthehip

The focus here should be on the vile racism dripping from every corner of Tancredo’s mouth.

People like Tom all but assure that no hispanics in America will vote Republican ever again.

    For that, I’ll thank him.

  • Mal

Much of what I had to say has been said above. Unlike Mediaite, Media Matters don’t purport to be ‘unbiased’. Where is your reporting of Tancredo on McCain if it is so important to you, Colby Hall? McCain would have to be the most reported on, failed Presidential candidate in US history. The only sign of breahlessness here is Hall’s breathtaking inability to sport the real news story – Tancredo’s dog whistle politics, and his represenation of Obama as some sort of socialist. The silliness of Hall’s position leaves me breathless!

  • pyrope

The wrong guy got the Republican nomination. OK, so what’s new? MediaMatters is biased. OK, so what’s new? The Tea Party shows disdain for both Democrats and Republicans. OK, so what’s new?

What no one seems to be picking up on is that the Tea Party is now a viable force in American politics. Given the historic idiocy of the Democrats, Libertarians, and Republicans, it should be obvious to all that the status quo is no longer acceptable. (No, I’m NOT a member or affiliate of the Tea Party.) Although I would have preferred the rise of the “Objectivist Party” or maybe the “Neo-Technocratic Pragmatists Party” (the only requirement for joining would be that the applicant must be able to spell and understand the words), but “Tea Party” would do.
