It’s a shame that you cannot keep your political preferences out of conversations like this.  It does not matter if a person is conservative or liberal.  It is NOT appropriate to use the words “bitch” or “dick”, as that shows a bit of stupidity.  Parents choose, and have the right to choose, whether or not they want their children breastfed.  If a child becomes hungry FOR WHATEVER REASON (and children do become hungry even when it’s not convenient for them to do so) then that parent has a responsibility to take care of that child.  If you, or others like you, were breastfed, I doubt very much that your parents would have decided to let YOU go hungry no matter what the rest of the illiterate people out there may think about it.  Breasts were not made for Men’s eyes…or hands…or mouths!  They are there to FEED THEIR CHILDREN.

First of all, babies get hungry and they really aren’t concerned about where the mother is when they make those demands.

LIKE I SAID, this is about breastfeeding in public.  It is not about Barak Obama or whether someone is democrat or republican (and I am Republican).  When a woman is feeding her child (and I do disagree with it all hanging out, which is not ok) and if she does not have some type of throw to cover herself, then I feel that person is a bit irresponsible for not being more prepared.  But, if it offends anyone, they should not sit there and gawk at the scene.  They should not call the woman a fat bitch, or tell to the world they lost their appetite.  As a public figure (if that is what you call this NASCAR person) he should know better than to talk in that manner.  That is, unless he just does not care one way or the other about his fans or career.  There is such a thing as tact.  If this woman just “let it all hang out”, then she should feel a bit embarrassed by her lack of modesty, but NOT by having to breastfeed in public.

The reason it would be anything other than a) is in situations such as mine.  My daughter won’t take a bottle.  What should we do?  Let her starve if we happen to be out in public?  My wife, fortunately, is always prepared for the situation and always brings a cover to use for when we are out so it isn’t a problem.  In addition, the answer for us was d)…my wife managed to get a job where she can work from home.  It’s not that people simply “think” it is natural…it IS natural.  Why do you think your breasts exist?  They literally have no other purpose.

James, report fairly. Kasey Kahne was insulted by this person first who called him a d**cheb*g. He reacted in anger by calling her the “b” word, regretted it, then deleted 2 posts. She screen shot it before he deleted it, posted it everywhere and conveniently omitted her insulting tweet. In this socially hooked up society, none of us will ever know how many insulting, disparaging comment celebrities are subjected to just because they’re public figures, until they snap and it is aired for all to see. It comes at a heavy price as I’m sure Kasey Kahne is learning the hard way. He realized, too late, how it came off. Had that person not insulted him first, she and her friends wouldn’t have gone on this media smear campaign that you saw fit to report on. Why is she being held accountable for her sexist, derogatory remark to him.

His comment was NOT about being offended by a woman breastfeeding but over one breast being exposed, hanging out. I breastfed and was always considerate of the feelings of those around me.

It would bother me if a woman was walking through a store topless, there are children there. Tell me,what is the difference in a woman going topless and her breastfeeding? They show what is usually covered up, considered indescent in normal situations. Couldnt she take said child to her car or go somewhere less public? I have to urinate sometimes but i have time to go to the bathroom. These women for the most part are just doing it for the attention. My wife brestfed and she never did it in public,she was prepared and had bottles with it or went somewhere like the car.

Gregory Smith…is blood something that feeds a human baby or in any way something to eat?  Is a bowel movement or urine?  No it is not so how is that comparison in any way logical? A human female becomes pregnant and in her last few weeks of pregnancy and directly after birth her milk comes in to feed her young, just like any other mamal on the planet. It is human milk for human babies and is the best most whole and healthy food for a human child.  

Babies hate covers by the way and pull them off once they have control of thier arms right around a few months old! Babies want to eat as soon as they feel hunger and will become quite irrate.  Why can a woman feed garbage formula to a baby in a store but not 100% healthy and meant for babies human milk?

It is this culture and bottle fed society that makes breastfeeding wrong and sexualizes the womans breast so much that people turn their heads and attack her when she uses them for what they are intended to be used for.

Babies need to bed fed when they decide they are hungry and moms should be allowed to do just that.  Breasts are for nursing primarily and I don’t see how that offends someone.  I am currently nursing my 15 month old and do not expect him to eat wtih a blanket over his head, nor would I.  Something that prevents so many illnesses and leads to a lifetime of health and wellness should be respected.  Maybe he should have given her a thumbs up or told her how great it was that she was answering the needs of her child.  Really, are moms supposed to not leave the house or sit in the car every hour or so because their babies or toddlers need to nurse.  We, as a collective society, need to grow up.

Do yu REALLY think the woman was there with her nipple and areola out???  Come on!  I am currently a breastfeeding mother and I can tell you that even if you are not modest, your boob REALLY does not show much at all when feeding.  Ya know, baby’s head covers boob while nursing?  My shirts I wore before becoming a mommy showed way more boob, clevage than is ever showing when I am breastfeeding.  And no man, espically not a red blooded NASCAR man ever complained then!!!! This is such a stupid reason to debate.  When a woman is sacraficing her body to breastfeed in order to give her child the best start in life she should be applauded.  It is harder and we are teathered to our children and no one can feed them but us when we do it the way we should.  I wouldnt have it any other way and every single human child deserves it’s mother’s milk when it is hungry.  Not in a bathroom, dressing room, car or dark corner somewhere.

Breast milk contains natural antibodies you can’t get from formula, it makes the baby more resistant to germs and bacteria. Babies are born with very  few antibodies and are susceptible to disease.Years ago it was normal to see a woman nursing her child, today it’s fround upon as something out of the ordinary. Woman that breast feed have healthier babies and that should be their number one concern, not what other people think. In most cases the breast will return to normal after the lactation period is over and in some the breast will be larger. Any person that cannot accept the fact that a woman must nurse her baby is very immature.

As a woman, you should know that an infant knows no such thing as “time and place” when it comes to needed attention. Also, you do not “whip out your tits” in the middle of anywhere. If the mom was in the grocery store then she was probably shopping for groceries while at the same time trying to feed her baby. There is a lack of information to say that she didn’t try to have some cover (babies do pull blankets off) or perhaps she has to watch the baby while it is nursing because the baby may tend to choke, as some babies do. All we know for sure is that Kahne seems to have a very low tolerance for anything he doesn’t like. Perhaps he should have not taken the second look if he was afraid of what he would see. More importantly, he needs to grow up. To react as he did is childish and juvenile and obviously created concern among his sponsors- they don’t want to be tarred with the same brush as he will be.

B) more natural then formula (have you ever had to drink a bottle of formula recently, that’s what should gross you out) oh and c) a thousand times better for the baby. if you are not sure about what mothers do while they are at work and there babies need to feed perhaps you should familiarize yourself with the law before making assumptions. if it is not an “undue hardship” to your workplace they must provide you with time and a place to express breast milk for at least the first year of child’s life.  as for sex being natural and why you just don’t do it in wal mart. do you have sex to provide life sustaining nutrition for your boyfriend? does your boyfriend have a sex schedule that he needs to be accomodated with? 

i don’t know why so many people assume more women breastfed in the 1950′s then they do now. this is just not the case. most dr’s actually reccomended not to breast feed. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1088218/ and le leche league was created around the 1950′s. which is a group that is about obtaining rights for breast feeding mothers. this is not an “all of the sudden” thing. this is a progressive issue that still obviously has some intolerance from society even though the law is accepting. sometimes laws are not right and people take a stand, and change the laws. but sometimes, and i believe this to be the case here the laws are right. sometimes they get it right.

time and place is not the issue. peoples rights are the issue. the driver has the right to say whatever he wants, and the woman has the right to breast feed however she wants and it is not considered indecent in the eyes of the law. does the driver think he is above the law? he should respect her rights. maybe he is not well informed. also i don’t think he should have to apologize, as he can say whatever he wants. but he says whatever he wants knowing that people will have their own opinions of what he says and apparently he is a little confused about whether he cares or not.

I agree, that when a baby is hungry, feed the baby, but a cover is the respectful thing to do for others who also have a right not to watch. If you’re in a more private setting, like in a booth at a restaurant, everything’s cool. Some of these ladies here forget that as much as they have the right to breastfeed without a cover, the others in the room have rights as well.

If a restaurant owner sees that people are offended by open breastfeeding, they have the right to ask you to cover. It’s their restaurant, their investment, their clientele, so it should be their call. Maybe if this becomes a big issue, then some restaurants will have a more private family section, like smokers enjoyed at one time.

Well said smcintosh, a mother needs to be better prepared if she is breastfeeding her baby and heads out to shop, etc. Modesty is a big deal.

If the same woman was not breastfeeding and had her dress fall apart at the check out counter exposing her breast, she would be mortified.. Right?

I agree with you.. I’ve seen open breastfeeding before, and was shocked at first. You just give them some space and don’t gawk. Still, ladies need to think about reality in our culture. Modesty still exists here…

I am TOTALLY with you. I just “Love” the “liberal” or “Tea bagger” things that people say. I mean…EVERYTHING seems to becomes political. Good Lord! LOL. and I am FAR from liberal, but there are times when My boys had to eat and with the amount of errands I had, I DEFINITELY took time to feed them. I went off to a corner and covered myself. So it often wasn’t very obvious. But it is ok. At least you didn’t have to Be Rude and condescending like so many others on this post. Including one of our Nascar guys. No reason to put down people! Just as there is no reason to let it all hang out. We can do it decently. Of course, the amount of clothing young teen girls and older wear these days, you can see more than you could from these woman nourishing their children. haha

haha I couldn’t resist stating these are SOOO different. but also…Mean grabbing their “YOU KNOW” (i AM NOT about to say the things like I am seeing on this board but you know what I mean) and that hAPPENS all the time, including women with the low cut shirts, men with pants handing below their butts. I prefer the breastfeeding mom. and Hopefully she isn’t letting it all  hang out, but there is a way to do it decently. It does not compare to that stuff. :0) Just had to note that :0)

There are times when it just has to be done. I think it can definitely be done in a decent way. BUt OMG the stuff that hangs out these days….and these are NOT from someone breastfeeding.

Umm yeah whatever. You can blame woman or blame men, but either way….it is the t.v. and the way sex is every where. After reading so much complaining, I think I will totally start advocating for the nursing mom! I wasn’t against it, but I am against the blame game. Yeah. America needs to wake up. When guys stop grabbing themselves, slapping their rears (in sports), wearing pants below their butts, and girls (I dont’ say ladies here) don’t wear open shirts to their belly buttons, MAYBE we won’t focus so much on the nursing mom! haha

Do you not realize that they have places for you to urinate and to take a dump. They dont have special areas just for women to breastfeed. In most instances the breast of the mother is almost completely covered by the nursing baby. I have yet to see one mother walking around with just her breast hanging out. Oh and next time you’re hungry and in public, how about you wait till all of your errands are done, no fast food no nothing and you just wait. See how that feels and multiply that feeling since babies eat every 4-6 hours.

There’s just too much insanity out there in the public today to risk open nursing for one. Look at the way people disrespect each other already. All this garbage reality TV, sensationalism, shock TV… it’s made us a little too promiscuous with our thinking.

I actually think it is nice to see a mother nursing her child, it gives me a sense that they will be closer later in life as opposed to all the bottle babies I grew up with. BUT, public life has much less decorum than it did thirty years ago, and if my wife were nursing, there would be a agreement between us that privacy is paramount, that safety comes first in public nursing.

I think some of the women pushing the open nursing tend to thrive on shock value and tend to be rebels in what they perceive to be a male-run society. That’s a crock.. I’m a middle-aged bachelor, and from where I stand, most of my buddies have very little power with their wives..  They will huff and puff when I stand around drinking coffee with the guys, but I believe it’s a different story at home.

I don’t buy the male dominated thing.. that’s a bogus story.

Funny that you all aren’t offended by the bottles. Baby bottles are basically plastic breasts with giant plastic mutant nipples. The bottle stands in for the breast, but you’re all offended that the breast be used as nature intended. It’s just weird that you don’t find a plastic wonky breast with plastic giant nipple on it just as offensive. When you tell a woman to feed baby from a bottle, it really sounds strange. Is everyone that terrified of breasts and nipples?

Some eat even more often. For any mom who has breastfed an infant, you know that going 4+ hours is painful for the mom. I think that’s why NATURE has the baby nurse on demand. 

Why is something acceptable only if it’s sexually arousing? Doesn’t it make ANYONE uncomfortable to have women/men walking around in skimpy clothing obviously TRYING to sexually arouse those around them? What about courtesy and decency in those cases? Why not insist that women throw a shawl or cover over their cleavage to show respect for everyone around them? You see where this is going?

Unbelievable. There are LOTS of things that people do that I do not want to be subjected to, but I don’t pull the “I have my rights” card. Breastfeeding is as natural as breathing and being a breastfeeding mother currently, I know that breastfed babies need to eat more often than formula fed babies. This is not always convenient for the derranged people who are offended or grossed out by public breastfeeding. I say, find something else for your eyes to look at! Women can hang their boobs out in thousands of movies or in porn and guys are okay with it, but not in a grocery store? Grow up! It’s just a breast, an anatomical part of the body! Some people need to get their heads screwed on straight and realize this world does not revolve around them.

A woman can dress sexy. I do not care about bras at Victoria’s Secret. It is not an issue we are discussing. The issue is that it is not normal to make a woman feel bad, shamed or insecure when she is only trying to do what is best for her child.  It is just breast feeding. Don’t you understand that? It is simply doing what nature intended. If formula was never created then every woman with the physical ability to breast feed would as that would be the only option…SO, NO ONE WOULD EVER EVEN THINK ABOUT. There would be no debate over nursing in public or covering up. Feeding a child from the breast would be expected and common practice. It would be as big of a deal or as interesting as seeing a woman take a breath. The more it is seen, the more normal it becomes. Then more women will breastfed their children because they will not fear how uncomfortable it is when you have a screaming baby who wants to eat right away no matter where you are in public. Women wont fear the nursing in public shame and the debate and feel secure in choocing to feed healthy milk to their babies.

I can dress with all of my cleavage out, fully busty and that is never a problem, but if I breast feed uncovered, showing less cleavage that is a problem and I should be arrested.  Can you see how sick that is and how far off our culture our society is? We women in this country should only display our selves in ways pleasing to the eyes not in a way we were created to. 

Yep, your are exactly right Laureen, it’s sick, but you can thank our wacky culture for that. You can thank the Feminist Movement for painting women as victims, encouraging women to think that being a mother is somehow degrading or mediocre, to call a lawyer because some guy responds to a pair of half-exposed breasts (if it’s the wrong guy) and all those crazy notions.

Our culture is way out of sync… maybe we need to backtrack about 50-75 years and take another path.
